About Us

For years, Humboldt runners have been running on the scenic roads and trails surrounding Humboldt Bay.  Many of these runners have done a 20+ mile lap around Humboldt Bay as part of their training for marathon races.

In the summer of 2014, the thought occurred to us to organize a marathon that would circle Humboldt Bay.  We are very excited to be turning this concept into reality!

Humboldt Bay Marathon is a nonprofit affiliate of the Road Runners Club of America.  Our mission is to promote fitness, outdoor recreation and trail projects in the Humboldt Bay area.

Meet the Directors

Rich Baker, Event DirectorHumboldt Bay Marathon Director Rich Baker

Rich came up with the idea for the Humboldt Bay Marathon in the summer of 2014 and has been the driving force behind the effort to turn this idea into reality.  Rich has been an event organizer for 16 years and has directed international Scrabble(R) Tournaments in 20 different countries.

Rich has a Ph.D. in Astrophysics and has taught at Humboldt State University, College of the Redwoods  and Cal Poly State University.  Rich is a recreational runner, still trying to break the 2 hour barrier for the half marathon.

Terri Vroman Little, Assistant Director

Assistant Director Terri Vroman Little

Terri has had a love of the outdoors her entire life.  She is a retired wilderness trail worker and passionate backpacker and hiker.  For many summers, she taught Wilderness Ethics and Natural Resources classes to CCC trail crews in remote wilderness camps.

Terri has been running in the greater Humboldt Bay area for over 30 years.  While running cross country at College of the Redwoods, her true love of running was born.  She has completed countless road races, including many half marathons and two full marathons.  Her first marathon qualified her for Boston, and her second marathon in 2012 was The Big Boston!

Terri has been coordinating a school running club since 2005.  She is Race Director for the Fox Trot lap-a-thon and the Dunes 5K and 10K runs (Six Rivers Running Club circuit races).

Terri is also an Elementary Montessori educator and school founder of Redwood Coast Montessori.  She holds an MA Ed. from Humboldt State University as well as Montessori and public elementary credentials.  Terri learned to play recreational soccer as a grown up and continues to coach children's soccer.  She has also raised four wonderful children and has imbued each of them with a love of the outdoors.

Trevor Carlson, Course Technical Director

Trevor is excited to be Course Technical Director for the Humboldt Bay Marathon! He started running in Portland, OR in 1994 before the age of GPS watches and Google Maps. In order to accurately record his training mileage, he mapped out the streets of Portland with his bike and bike computer. He enjoyed making new routes and taking the time to make sure his measurements were accurate. For an example of one of Trevor's road maps from his early days of running, click here.

Trevor's current role for the Humboldt Bay Marathon has given him an opportunity to combine his knowledge from these experiences and a love of running around beautiful Humboldt Bay. Trevor's primary goal is to make sure this is a scenic, participant friendly course.

Trevor holds a Doctor of Physical Therapy degree from University of Puget Sound. Trevor is a physical therapist at EPT Rehabilitation where he works with many runners. Trevor also writes running related articles and coaches runners through his website t-running.com.
